USA – Former president Donald Trump, prosecutors and his defence team delivered opening statements on Monday during his historic trial. A former National Enquirer publisher also testified. Prosecutors argued that Trump’s payment of hush money to Stormy Daniels aimed to influence the 2016 election by hiding damaging information. Trump’s lawyers argued that he was innocent of falsifying business records, claiming there’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election.
Space – For the first time in five months, NASA engineers have successfully received clear data from Voyager 1 after finding a solution for a communication issue on the spacecraft. Engineers fixed a problem with the spacecraft’s telemetry modulation unit, which had been sending an unclear pattern of code. Voyager 1 is further from Earth than any other spacecraft.
Malaysia – Two Malaysian navy helicopters collided mid-air on Tuesday at the Lumut naval base in Perak during a rehearsal for a naval parade. According to a navy statement, ten crew members lost their lives. A video that has been verified by local police shows the helicopters coming together and the rotors touching each other, causing both to crash. The navy has begun an investigation into the cause of the incident.
Colombia – Nancy Gonzalez, a renowned fashion designer whose accessories were popular among celebrities, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for illegally smuggling crocodile handbags from Colombia to the US. Arrested in 2022 and later extradited, Gonzalez was charged with running a scheme that involved using couriers to bring her products to high-end fashion events in New York, violating wildlife laws.
