US – Pop star Taylor Swift has backed the Democratic Party’s Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election. Swift posted on Instagram after Harris debated Republican Donald Trump, urging voters to research candidates before deciding who to vote for. She warned about the threat of AI misinformation, mentioning fake images linking her to Trump. Swift praised Harris’s leadership and her running mate Tim Walz’s support for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights. She encouraged her fans, especially new voters, to register and vote early.
US – Rihanna wowed at New York Fashion Week, presenting an award at the Daily Front Row Fashion Media Awards. She wore a pink Alaïa coat, a sheer John Galliano dress, and Area x Sergio Rossi sandals. Her Bayco diamond jewellery, worth over $640,000, stole the show. Earlier, Rihanna had modelled Bayco jewels for Perfect magazine covers.
Philippines – Preacher Apollo Quiboloy surrendered to authorities in Davao City after being accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking. He was flown to Manila with four others and detained at the national police headquarters. Quiboloy and his lawyer deny the charges, claiming critics made them up. US prosecutors charged him with sex trafficking in 2021. He was previously close to former President Rodrigo Duterte.
US – A 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Los Angeles on 13 August. About a million Californians received early warnings through the MyShake app, developed by the University of California, Berkeley, and the state’s emergency services. The app uses phone data to send alerts. While it’s a breakthrough, experts like Tom Heaton from Caltech say predicting exact earthquake times is impossible. Even in earthquake-prone Japan, predictions remain cautious.
