Sudan – Doctors Without Borders (MSF) report that Sudanese paramilitary forces attacked the main hospital in North Darfur. The Rapid Support Forces looted the hospital on Saturday, stealing medical supplies and an ambulance. Following the attack, MSF and the Ministry of Health stopped activities at the South Hospital in El Fasher, which was necessary for treating war casualties. Patients are now being moved to less prepared hospitals. While most patients and MSF staff escaped, it’s unclear if there were casualties. The hospital had been attacked multiple times between 25 May and 3 June, causing deaths and injuries.
Mexico – Norma, a shop owner and political coordinator near Mexico City, regrets calling the police about noise from a rival party. After her complaint in November, she received threats and was followed. After the rival party won the municipal election two weeks ago, Norma felt increasingly unsafe and decided to leave town. She and her three children crossed into the United States, seeking asylum because of the violence in Mexico’s elections. President Joe Biden’s new executive order now blocks most asylum requests from those crossing the southern border during high-volume periods.
Europe – Over the last 20 years, mosquitoes have become a growing threat on the continent. The Asian tiger mosquito, the world’s most invasive mosquito, has spread from southern Europe to countries like Austria, Germany, and Spain. This mosquito can spread diseases like dengue fever and the Zika virus. Another species, Aedes aegypti, which spreads yellow fever and other diseases, has settled in Cyprus. Warming weather due to global warming has increased the problem.
Hamas – Hamas has responded to a US-supported ceasefire plan for Gaza, demanding Israel commit to a permanent ceasefire. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) are ready to agree to the deal, which starts with a six-week ceasefire and could become permanent, supported by the UN Security Council. Qatar, Egypt, and the US mediated the negotiations. Hamas and PIJ called for a complete stop to the fighting, prioritising the Palestinian people’s interests. The White House found Hamas’s response “helpful” and is looking into their requests.
US – President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, 54, was found guilty of lying about his drug use when buying a handgun in 2018. It was the first criminal prosecution of a sitting president’s child. Hunter faces potential jail time. His conviction comes as Biden campaigns for re-election. Although Biden did not attend the trial, many family members, including First Lady Jill Biden, were present. After the verdict, Biden flew to Wilmington, Delaware, to support his son, but he ruled out pardoning him.
