South Korea – Police have arrested South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, six weeks after he tried to use the army to keep power. After a standoff, police entered his house and took him to the anti-corruption office. He is now in the Seoul Detention Centre but has refused to speak to the investigators. Before being arrested, Yoon made a video saying the law had broken down, but he would go with the police to avoid fighting.
Japan – Kanye West met his three youngest children – Saint, Chicago and Psalm – in Tokyo after their mother, Kim Kardashian, left LA because of the fires. People spotted them buying snacks at a 7-Eleven shop in the Ginza area. It is unclear if his oldest child, North, was there, and his wife, Bianca Censori, was not seen. West and Censori have been travelling around Asia and the Middle East for six months.
USA – Former US First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump’s swearing-in next week, her office has announced. Michelle has previously spoken against Trump, saying his words endangered her family. Traditionally, all former presidents and their spouses attend these ceremonies. George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, as well as Bill and Hillary Clinton, plan to be there. Although she attended former President Jimmy Carter’s memorial, Michelle has mostly avoided large public events.
Bukavu – Three Chinese men are on trial in Bukavu for illegal gold mining in Walungu, South Kivu. They face seven charges, including taking minerals illegally, hiding money, and committing fraud. Lawyer Thomas Chidibi has called for a fair trial, arguing that the men violated DRC’s laws. The case is significant because illegal gold mining is destroying the environment and polluting rivers in the area. Another lawyer, Christian Wanduma, hopes the ruling will deter illegal mining. Police caught the three men in January 2024 with 10 gold bars and R7.6 million (US$400,000) in cash, which sparked public outrage.
