USA – Melania Trump wore a white sleeveless dress with black patterns for Donald Trump’s second inauguration party on 20 January. Her friend Hervé Pierre designed it, just as he had made her first inauguration dress. Earlier that day, she wore a navy blue coat and skirt by Adam Lippes with a wide hat for the swearing-in. During the ceremony, Donald tried to kiss her cheek but missed, giving her an air kiss instead.
UK – Doctors have saved a mother of three by removing a tumour that was thought to be impossible to reach. Kaviya had a growth under her brain and behind her eyes. After discovering a second tumour in October, doctors at Leeds Hospital operated in February 2024. They practised on 3D models beforehand. Thanks to new methods, the operation took just three hours, and Kaviya was able to walk the same day.
Burkina Faso – President Ibrahim Traoré has banned judges from wearing white wigs, similar to those worn in British and French courts. He wants to remove old colonial practices from the country’s courts. Other African countries are also trying to bring back their own traditions instead of following old colonial customs.
Japan – A sunfish at a Japanese aquarium started acting strangely when the place closed for repairs in December. It rubbed against its tank and stopped eating. Staff initially thought it was sick but later realised it might be lonely without visitors. They placed cut-out faces of people on the tank, and the fish improved, eating again. The friendly fish, popular with visitors, should see real people again when the aquarium reopens in summer.
