East Timor – In a small village in Timor-Leste, locals and scientists are working together to study pygmy blue whales as they pass through the area. Fisherman Faustino Mauloko da Cunha and marine ecologist Karen Edyvane are leading the project, which has tracked nearly 3,000 whales since it began in 2014. They’ve even seen rare moments like a mother whale feeding her baby. The team uses drones and volunteers to learn more about these amazing animals in an area that hasn’t been studied much.
Korea – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol could lose his job after trying to bring in martial law. Parliament quickly stopped him, and now opposition leaders want to impeach him. On Saturday, they’ll vote on whether to remove him. Even members of Yoon’s own party are turning against him, which might help the opposition win the vote.
Sudan – Girls as young as 11 have been raped, with many left with serious injuries or worse, in the ongoing war in Sudan. The attacks often happen during RSF raids, where women are also harassed and searched in humiliating ways. In Sudan’s war, women and girls are suffering terrible violence from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, Dr Shaza, a 25-year-old medical volunteer, said. Some women have even taken their own lives to escape the abuse. Dr Shaza now lives in a camp for displaced people and says the trauma is widespread.
