Nigeria – 10 people were killed and 160 others, including children, were abducted by suspected Boko Haram militants in Kuchi village, Niger state, Nigeria. The attack began around 5.30pm on Friday and lasted until 4am on Saturday. About 300 gunmen arrived on motorbikes, stayed for several hours, cooked food, and then left with the captives. Some of the dead were local vigilantes who resisted the attackers. Security forces have not yet started rescue operations.
Florida – Rapper Sean Kingston has agreed to be deported to Florida to face fraud and theft charges of over $1-million (R20-million). Arrested on 23 May in California, he and his mother, Janice Turner, allegedly defrauded businesses of money, jewellery, and a luxury car. Kingston remains jailed in California. He is also being sued for breach of contract and fraud over an unpaid TV and sound system. Before his arrest, Kingston posted on Instagram that he and his mother were fine and that his lawyers were handling the situation.
Hong Kong – Fourteen major Hong Kong democratic figures were sentenced for undermining authorities on Thursday. The activists and politicians were found guilty of “conspiracy to commit subversion” for organising an unofficial primary election in 2020. This trial, involving 47 defendants known as the “Hong Kong 47” showcased Beijing’s strict enforcement of national security law following mass protests. Among the 47, most pleaded guilty, while 16 have contested the charges.
New York – Former president Donald Trump is on trial in New York City, facing felony charges linked to a 2016 payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This is the first time a former US president has been tried on criminal charges. Last April, Trump pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment accusing him of falsifying business records related to the payment, which was made by his then-attorney Michael Cohen to enhance Trump’s 2016 election prospects. After a recent court appearance, Trump told reporters that the crime he’s charged with is unclear, even though District Attorney Alvin Bragg read all 34 counts during Trump’s hearing, and the judge reviewed each one during jury instructions.
