US – Joe Biden’s lacklustre and stumbling performance during the first televised debate of the 2024 presidential election, has worried many Democrats, although Vice-President Kamala Harris defended him, mentioning his strong finish. Trump, his Republican rival, attacked Biden’s economic and foreign policy records, while Biden pointed out Trump’s recent criminal conviction in New York and alleged interference in the 2020 election. The debate became tense, with Biden calling Trump names, prompting an angry response from the challenger.
Peru – A strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit near Atiquipa, southern Peru, 600 kilometres south of Lima. The earthquake which occurred 28 kilometres below ground, caused major shaking felt by residents. CCTV footage captured the tremors in Caraveli and reports of shaking as far as Lima. No deaths were reported, but the government is evaluating damage to the infrastructure. A tsunami warning was sent out but later cancelled.
Kenya – Protests have spread across Kenya despite President William Ruto cancelling a controversial finance bill. Demonstrators, part of the “One Million People March,” called for demonstrations in Nairobi and threatened to occupy the State House. The protests, resulting from high cost of living and state violence, calls for Ruto’s resignation and justice for the more than 23 people killed in clashes with the authorities. Civic groups demanded the removal of top police officials accused of shooting protesters. A strong police presence and roadblocks reduced crowd sizes.
Mali – The International Criminal Court convicted Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Timbuktu. Al Hassan, linked to al Qaeda and Islamist group Ansar Dine, committed the crimes between April 2012 and May 2013. He was convicted of torture and outrages on personal dignity, while charges related to rape were dropped due to insufficient evidence. The trial involved 2,196 victims, 195 hearings, 7,896 documents, and 13,275 items of evidence. Al Hassan remains in custody pending sentencing, with a 30-day appeal period.
India – A section of the roof at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has collapsed after heavy rain. The collapse happened around 5am at Terminal 1’s old departure forecourt, resulting in departures from Terminal 1 being suspended. Delhi Fire Services reported two support pillars fell on a car, killing a man inside while eight eight others were injured. Rescuers extracted his body and transported the injured to hospital. Photos show the collapsed canopy crushing multiple vehicles.
