Captain Aiden Markram says he has moved past the disappointment as the Proteas gear up for their first T20 series since losing the World Cup final to India in June.

South Africa is back in the Caribbean for a three-match series against the West Indies.

Although the memories of that June evening in Barbados may still haunt the players and fans, Markram is focused on the future.

“Losing the World Cup final was tough to accept at the time. But over time, I’ve been able to handle it, process what happened, and put it to rest,” Markram said in a press conference on Tuesday.

“Fortunately, I had some time to step away from cricket, which allowed me to reset. It was important for everyone to make peace with how things ended so we could move on.”

After a 1-0 win in the Test series, Markram also discussed his transition from red-ball to white-ball cricket.

The change in coaching staff is a notable difference. Rob Walter took charge of the T20s, while Shukri Conrad led the team during the Tests.

“They’re two completely different formats, and having separate coaching teams is actually refreshing,” he said.

“I’ve got no issues adapting. Each coaching group brings new energy and ideas to the series, which is great. Rob also stays in touch with Shucks [Conrad].”
