Workers spend day in wheelchairs to understand disability struggles

By Razeen Gutta

Workers in Gqeberha are swapping their office chairs for wheelchairs to understand what life is really like for disabled people.

Wheelchair Wednesday is now 14 years old. Companies make their staff spend a day in wheelchairs to see the world differently.

Workers try to shop at supermarkets, get out of cars and reach items on high shelves. They quickly learn how hard these simple tasks become.

“We want our employees to see why our work environment needs to be safe and inclusive,” says risk worker Chanté Holster.

“We also need to make sure that disabled people can access our buildings easily.”

The day changes how people think. Many workers had never realised how difficult it is to open heavy doors or use stairs when you’re in a wheelchair.

Companies are now buying wheelchairs to donate and making their offices more accessible. They’re adding ramps and fixing bathrooms.

Shops are also learning from the feedback. Store owners hear about problems with entrances, ramps and toilet access.

The programme helps millions of South Africans with disabilities who face these challenges every day.

Each wheelchair bought supports a good cause and makes the city more inclusive for everyone.
