Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize has passed away aged 69.
Mkhize, a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC), previously held the position of Minister of Higher Education and Training, during former President Jacob Zuma’s tenure.
Before that, she served as the Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services.
Mkhize, who has a string of qualifications to her name, had a short stint as a lecturer at Wits University until 1995, a year after the 1994 elections.
Mkhize’s passion about the development of young women led her to be an avid supporter of pro-women organisations.
Her party, the ANC, has yet to comment about her death.
It is also unknown at this stage what illness she suffered from that ultimately led to her death.
Tributes are coming in for Mkhize. And our condolences go out to her family and loved ones.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to offer his condolences today.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said the party will release a statement on Mkhize’s passing soon.
