A fight between neighbours turned deadly when a woman attacked her neighbour with an axe on Friday in Msindweni informal settlement, Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

A resident who didn’t want to be named said the victim’s grandchild fought with the neighbour’s child.

“The victim went to confront her neighbour’s kid, and that is when the kid’s mother got involved,” said the resident.

“The two started fighting, and the neighbour allegedly grabbed an axe and attacked the victim, leaving her with three wounds to the head.”

The victim didn’t go to hospital but asked her children to help treat her wounds.

“They all took the wounds lightly, not knowing they were deep and could harm her. We heard the news of her passing on Saturday morning,” the resident said.

“We are shocked that a fight between kids led to her death. I wish parents could learn to control anger and remember that kids will always be kids.”

She said the two kids regularly fought on one day but played together the next.

Another resident said the neighbours had been arguing for a while and wished “they could have solved the problem without fighting”.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

“The circumstances surrounding her death form part of the police investigation,” he said.
