‘We will take back Joburg’s hijacked buildings’ – PA

By Doreen Mokgolo

Kenny Kunene, the acting MMC of human settlements in Jo’burg and a founding member of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), is determined to regain control of the city’s hijacked buildings.

Kunene said on Thursday that Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda of the Al Jama-ah party has given him the power to manage the human settlement department until a new MMC is chosen.

Kunene stepped in after Anthea Leigh resigned on Monday to focus on her PA treasurer-general job.

“The Patriotic Alliance is clear about illegal immigration. We will use our leadership positions to fight it,” Kunene said.

“Now that I’m in charge, no one can stop me from continuing the work I started last year as acting mayor.”

Kunene will work with the home affairs department to send illegal, undocumented immigrants in hijacked buildings back to their own countries.

He said it is essential to reclaim government-owned buildings.

“Look at Sunnyside in Pretoria. It used to be a beautiful area but is now overcrowded with foreign nationals and is even called Lagos,” he said.

“Once we reclaim these buildings, we can turn them into rented homes and student accommodation.”
