A gang demanding protection fee money from a construction company allegedly attacked a security guard and his K9 patrol dog at a site in Philippi, Cape Town.
The guard has been admitted to hospital, and the dog is receiving veterinary treatment.
The city’s MMC for urban mobility, councillor Rob Quintas, said the attack was unacceptable and undermined the city’s efforts to deliver much-needed services to communities.
“Over the past few weeks, the contractor has been receiving threats from people wanting to control the subcontracting of services. The city will not allow this thuggery. We will not succumb to those demanding so-called protection money,” said Quintas.
At least five shots were fired at the security guard and the dog while they were patrolling on a railway bridge.
“The security guard is recovering, and the dog was hit by two bullets. It is not out of danger yet,” said Quintas.
“I am pleading with the local community to support us in our efforts to bring these criminals to book. We offer rewards for information that leads to the arrest of those involved.”
A resident speaking anonymously believes that extortion will never end in the area.
He said people who are trying to make an honest living by selling fish and chips are being terrorised by the protection-fee gang.
“Criminals have taken over … and the sad reality is that no one can do anything to stop them,” said the resident. “If they can shoot the dog and the security guard, imagine what they are going to do to us ordinary citizens trying to make a living by selling chicken feet and [who] are forced to pay the protection fee money.
“It is not easy reporting the protection-fee gang because they will come back and kill you and your family. Most business people end up paying the protection money the criminals demand from them,” the resident said.
