‘We had no choice but to expel Zuma’ – Mbalula

By Celani Sikhakhane

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said the party has no regrets about expelling former president Jacob Zuma because he broke the ANC’s rules by holding membership cards for two different organisations.

Mbalula was speaking on Monday at the Coastlands Hotel in Durban, where he discussed the visit to KwaZulu-Natal of the party’s national working committee.

He explained that the ANC could not accept Zuma’s continued misconduct.

“Zuma violated the ANC’s constitution. We had no choice but to expel him. Others left the ANC voluntarily, so they were not expelled. Zuma cost us a lot of support in KZN,” said Mbalula.

Last month, the ANC’s disciplinary committee found Zuma guilty of hurting the party’s image by joining Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) and gave him three weeks to appeal the decision.

Mbalula also mentioned that the ANC is still in court with Zuma over the MK name. He said there wouldn’t have been a fight if Zuma had used the name “Jacob Zuma Mayibuye Kimi Party” instead.

The national working committee has been in KZN since Friday, visiting the 11 regions to understand why the ANC lost so badly in the province.

Scrolla.Africa has learned that on Saturday some members of the national executive committee suggested stopping all of their regional elective conferences in KZN to focus on rebuilding the party and planning for the 2026 local government elections.

During their visit, the ANC leadership explained to members why they decided to form a Government of National Unity (GNU), saying it was the only choice after losing the elections.

They also said that the MKP and EFF, who are not part of the GNU, made demands that the ANC found were unreasonable.

On Monday, the ANC leaders were reviewing reports from the 11 regions to help them decide on the future of the KZN leadership.
