The University of Limpopo has postponed its end-of-year examinations due to a water shortage that has affected it and other areas that rely on the Polokwane municipality’s supply.
Exams are set to resume on Monday.
Polokwane mayor John Mpe expressed disappointment at a media briefing that the university did not consult the municipality before deciding on the postponement.
University spokesperson Victor Kgomoeswana said the lack of water presents significant hygiene and safety risks for the 7,000 students on campus.
“To write exams where toilets are not flushing properly, where you cannot bathe properly, is very difficult,” he said.
“The university sees the danger and the health risks of having students without water.”
Kgomoeswana said the university contacted the municipality, which brought a water tanker, and “we have made other arrangements. We have managed to get portable toilets, and we’ve placed them at different spots around the campus.”
