“Watch the space!” Popular DJ set to leave Ukhozi for Vuma FM

Popular Ukhozi FM DJ Mzokhona “Mzokoloko” Gumede has announced that he will be leaving SABC‘s IsiZulu station for the Durban-based commercial radio station Vuma FM.

The listener favourite is set to start his new gig in February and has been earmarked for the breakfast show.

Sources said Mzokoloko jumped at the Vuma FM offer because he had grown tired of having to work the not-so popular weekend show.

Mzokoloko was apparently bitterly disappointed following last year’s annual reshuffling of DJs  because he was taken off the highly sought-after afternoon drive show, Sisonke Drive, which he co-hosted with Mroza Buthelezi.

The former Gagagi 99.5fm DJ was then given a technical producer role for a weekly talk show, as well as a Saturday graveyard slot.

“I can’t say much because I’m still under contract with the SABC but hey – watch the space,” Mzokoloko told Scrolla.Africa.

Vuma FM spokesperson Lydia Mtshali said there will be lots of changes to the station’s line-ups which will be announced soon.

“We will release a statement with full details,” Mtshali said.

Meanwhile, SABC has decided to advertise the Ukhozi FM programmes manager vacant post to external applicants. The public broadcaster held interviews with internal candidates but was apparently dissatisfied with their performances.

They are looking for a suitable candidate to replace Zandile Tembe, who was fired in October last year for allegedly protecting an unruly and wayward presenter.

In a written response SABC spokesperson Gugu Ntuli said, “The SABC has re-advertised the position of Ukhozi FM programmes manager for suitable external candidates to also compete for the crucial position.”
