Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won his second sprint race of the season to earn pole for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing behind him.
Verstappen brilliantly defended both Ferrari’s on the weekend of Red Bull’s home race, while his teammate Sergio Perez rose from 13th on the grid up into 5th.
The fight for second made for fantastic viewing with the two Ferrari’s going at it in sublime style. This is something Verstappen believed helped him pull away.
“As a Sprint should go, it’s quite flat-out. They [the Ferraris] were fighting a bit so I was able to pull out a gap, but after that we were closely matched. The car is good, just a few things to fine tune but overall we’ve been really competitive again this weekend,” the reigning world champion said.
Lewis Hamilton and Mick Schumacher had an interesting battle going as well, with the seven-time champion having to be at his very best to get past the 23-year-old.
Hamilton’s hard work got him into 8th place while his Mercedes Benz teammate George Russell finished in 4th.
The Austrian GP kicks off at 15:00 tomorrow afternoon live from Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
