Under pressure Sundowns eye Sekhukhune scalp

  • After a tough week with a CAF draw and Carling Knockout loss, Sundowns seek to regain form in Saturday’s match.
  • Grant Kekana admits mutual accountability and says they plan to improve their performance and challenge the log leaders.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be out to stop their slide when they host Sekhukhune United in a Premier Soccer League match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The Brazilians are enduring a difficult run of form highlighted by last weekend’s Carling Knockout final defeat by PSL newboys Magesi FC.

They were then frustrated to a 0-0 draw by AS Maniema in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday.

Defender Grant Kekana admits his side is not in a good space as they try to catch up with log leaders Orlando Pirates who have three points more than them.

“It’s been a tough week, obviously disappointed with the results of the final and we also couldn’t get victory in our first Champions League game,” Kekana told Sundowns’ media department.

“So we are trying to pick each other up. We know it’s still a long season ahead and we can’t cry over spilled milk.

“We just need to rectify where we need to and make sure we start winning games again.

While coach Manqoba Mngqithi has come out in the open blaming his players for the last two results, Kekana says they are all responsible for the slide.

“We are holding each other accountable,” the Bafana Bafana defender said.

“Each of us is given a task to do to make sure the team gets positive results.

“We have been doing a lot of introspection and we are happy that as players we are able to hold each other accountable.”

Sekhukhune are seventh on the PSL table and lost 3-1 to struggling TS Galaxy on Wednesday.

“Obviously when teams come to play against us they will be fired up,” Kekana added.

“We know they lost their last game against TS Galaxy but they have a good squad, good players and a good coach.

“It’s another tough game we really need to prepare for to get our confidence back.”

This is a season Sundowns are pushing for an eighth straight PSL title but face a stern test from Pirates.
