Uefa launch Women’s Champions League overhaul

By Razeen Gutta

Uefa decided on Saturday that a new Champions League format and a second competition are on the way for the women’s game.

With changes to the men’s Champions League format already in place for next season, Goal have reported that the green light has been given for development of the women’s game.

As from the 2025/26 season, the renovated women’s Champions League format will include an 18 team league phase with three home and away matches followed by the knockout stages.

The current structure features 16 teams split up in groups before the knockout stages, meaning that the new format will allow two new sides to enter into the competition.

Uefa’s executive committee also approved the creation of a second tier European competition for the women’s game — similar to the men’s Europa League.

More details will be released by Uefa in the coming days.
