Uber Eats customers in South Africa are paying up to 45% more when they use the platform’s self-pickup service instead of buying food directly at restaurants.
A recent analysis by MyBroadband compared prices at a small Pretoria restaurant. Four items cost R1,090.40 when ordered through Uber Eats’ Click and Collect service. The same order cost R752 when purchased at the restaurant.
The Click and Collect option launched in South Africa in May 2019. It allows customers to order and pay through the app while collecting the food themselves. This avoids delivery fees and driver tips.
But MyBroadband found that restaurants often apply a markup to compensate for Uber Eats’ commission, even when no delivery is involved.
Uber Eats launched in South Africa in September 2016 in Johannesburg. It expanded to Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha. The platform now supports more than 10,000 delivery partners and thousands of local merchants.
Previous pricing comparisons by Mybroadband showed that Uber Eats adds a markup of between 20% and 33% on food delivered to customers’ doors. This was based on orders from McDonald’s, Nando’s, Roman’s Pizza, RocoMamas and Simply Asia.
According to Uber Eats, higher prices help support the sustainability of the platform.
An Uber spokesperson previously said merchants on the app set their own prices. The company focuses on providing restaurants with access to its marketplace, as well as training and resources.
The findings suggest that while Click and Collect removes delivery costs, consumers may still pay significantly more than in-store prices for the convenience of ordering through Uber Eats.
