Popular radio host Anele Mdoda has shared a scary experience involving an Uber driver in Cape Town who threatened her with rape.
Mdoda selected Uber’s “don’t talk to me” option when ordering her ride early on Monday morning, which made the driver angry.
“My Uber driver tonight was upset that I had picked the ‘don’t talk to me’ option. He then said: ‘In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson,'” Anele wrote on social media platform X.
Scared for her safety, she pretended to be recording herself live on Instagram during the trip. When they reached her hotel, she says the driver became angry and started shouting at her.
A couple nearby saw she was in trouble and came to help.
Mdoda later posted a recording of what happened, apologising for her strong language but explaining she felt she was in danger.
Uber South Africa has asked Mdoda to send them details about the trip so they can look into it.
TV presenter Heidi Giokos supported Mdoda’s story, writing: “I’m sorry you had to go through this, Anele. I’ve always said that Uber drivers in Cape Town are the worst. My stomach is always tied when I take an Uber. And here’s a clear example of what happens!”
Other social media users shared their support. “I’m so sorry this happened to you. Proud you stood up for yourself in such a dangerous situation,” one person wrote.
Another added: “I don’t know how many people have complained about Ubers in Cape Town this weekend. These people are so arrogant. Don’t apologise.”
