A two-year-old girl almost lost her life after allegedly eating an expired Steers’s Wacky Wednesday burger.
Shortly after eating it she complained about a stomach ache and was admitted to hospital on Friday.
The child had asked her mother, Londeka Mafaka, 25, to remove the tomatoes from her burger.
“So I tasted it and found it was expired,” said Londeka.
The tomatoes were not the only problem, the mother noticed. The whole burger was covered with fungus and mould.
“I was furious because my daughter had already eaten a lot of it,” she said.
“I returned it to the shop and explained my fears but I was shocked at how rude the shop management was.”
She asked the manager to take the child to the doctor.
“They said we must wait until she gets sick, and in the meantime, pray that nothing bad happens to her,” she said.
The store allegedly gave them pizza while waiting for to see how the child responded.
“My child got sick. She was vomiting, had a rash and diarrhoea and she couldn’t sleep.”
She alerted the shop but the shop did nothing until she went back again.
“I want them to take full responsibility for their mistake. What happens if my daughter dies? Are they going to bring her back?”
Scrolla.Africa contacted Steers, whose response was, “We want to ensure everyone that we don’t sell expired food.”
They said they were a national brand with standards and perform ongoing audits from the national franchisor, local municipality, and our internal staff to ensure that the food quality and handling is hygienic and does not cause harm to their customers.
They apologised for the experience and said that it should have never happened, and they would make sure it didn’t happen again. They added that they are meeting with the mother to try and find a solution to this incident.
Another customer Namhla Soyivaphi once waited two hours for a burger.
“We have been complaining about them for a long time but they don’t take us seriously,” said Namhla.
“Their burger takes two hours as if you are waiting for samp. While dealing with rotten food, they must also train their cheeky staff who knows nothing about customer service.”
