- Two teenagers were killed and five others injured when gunmen opened fire on a group of friends in Westbury.
- Police say the shooting is gang-related and the suspects are known, while residents blame drugs and social media fights.
Two teenagers have been killed in a shooting in Westbury that police believe is linked to gang violence.
One teenager is still in a critical condition and four others are in hospital after the group was attacked while sitting outside a house.
Police say four men approached them. Three of the men pulled out guns and started shooting before running away.
Deputy Police Commissioner Fred Kekana said the suspects are known. “We know where they live and we are looking for them,” he said.
He asked the community to help bring calm to the area. “Parents and residents must work with us. We must say together that we will not allow these things in our community,” he said.
But some residents say it is not only about gangs and drugs. One resident, who lives in the area, said her daughter was almost targeted because of a social media post.
“Someone posted her picture online and another learner ordered a hit on her,” she said. “Our children are fighting old family battles and using guns they should not have.”
She said the police know what is happening but are not doing enough to stop it.
