Two South African soldiers lost their lives and three others were injured in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) when a mortar bomb hit a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) base around 1:30pm on Wednesday.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini shared this news. He explained that the South African troops are in the DRC as part of a mission by the Southern African Development Community. Their goal is to help the DRC government bring peace and stability to the area.
The injured soldiers were quickly taken to a hospital in Goma to get the care they needed.
“We are still trying to understand all the details of what happened. There will be more investigations to find out why this incident occurred,” said Dlamini.
Earlier in the week, the presidency said that President Cyril Ramaphosa would deploy 2,900 troops to Congo.
