- The Football Transformation Forum backs Danny Jordaan for a fourth term as Safa president despite his ongoing criminal fraud charges.
- Save Our Safa has not announced a presidential candidate yet but is gaining support from regions that traditionally backed Jordaan.
The Football Transformation Forum (FTF) wants Danny Jordaan to win a fourth term as South African Football Association (Safa) president.
The group helped Jordaan become Safa president in 2013. They also backed him in 2018 and 2022.
Tankiso Modipa is the FTF’s national convenor. He is also a member of Safa’s national executive committee and Western Province chairperson.
Modipa said aligned regions will meet in Bloemfontein from 30 January to 1 February to discuss succession plans.
“The regions have given me a mandate to publicly endorse our support for Jordaan’s fourth term. But we must still hear the position of other regions from other provinces,” Modipa said.
He claimed about 80% of Safa’s 52 regions had shown interest in the workshop.
When asked about funding for the three-day workshop, Modipa said they had private donors.
“We’re not using Safa money. We have donors. We’ve found people who have agreed to invest in us to help with our mobilisation in the regions,” he said, CityPress reported.
The Save Our Safa (SOS) movement emerged as an alternative to what it calls Safa’s “perpetual culture of maladministration and financial mismanagement”.
SOS leaders include Lebohang Riet, Gladwyn White and Mosimanegape Mathe from Safa Northern Cape. Monde Montshiwa and Orapeleng Setlhare from North West are also part of the group.
They have called for Jordaan and chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo to step aside until their criminal proceedings are finished.
On 13 November 2024, Jordaan and Hluyo were arrested on charges of allegedly defrauding Safa of more than R1-million. Both were released on R20,000 bail.
More than half of Safa’s regions attended an SOS caucus meeting in Bloemfontein late last year.
The SOS has not announced its presidential candidate yet.
Jordaan and Hluyo are scheduled to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge, Ekurhuleni, next month.
