The ongoing taxi wars in Ladysmith, northern KwaZulu-Natal, claimed two more lives and left two others injured on Monday.
Gunmen allegedly opened fire on a taxi near St Chad’s, killing two drivers instantly and injuring two others. One driver escaped unharmed.
Sources say the drivers worked on the Ladysmith-Johannesburg route, which caused conflict among powerful taxi industry families.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said police in Ezakheni were investigating two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
“Two men were declared dead on the scene. The deceased are 37 and 49 years old.”
The attack is believed to be linked to the ongoing taxi wars in the Klipriver Taxi Association, which have claimed several lives, including the association’s chairperson, Bhekuyise Masondo, and his bodyguard in September last year.
