  • Two bus drivers were shot dead in separate incidents in Soweto on Monday night with police now hunting for the killers.
  • The attacks follow last week’s torching of over 50 buses in Mpumalanga where two suspects were arrested.

Two bus drivers were shot dead in separate attacks in Soweto on Monday night.

Police are looking for a gang that murdered both drivers, says police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

“In the first incident, it is reported that the driver had stopped at a robot along Wildchestnut Street in Protea Glen when he was shot and killed by unknown suspects,” she said.

The second shooting happened on Tshithuthune Street. “In the second incident, at Tshithuthune Street, an eyewitness reported that he was the last passenger on the bus when he heard gunshots and took cover,” Nevhuhulwi said.

“After it got quiet, he realised that the driver had been shot. He tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. The driver was declared dead at the scene, and the passenger sustained no injuries. In both incidents, the motive is unknown at this stage, and police investigations continue.”

Rea Vaya released a statement on the incident where they said: “Passengers are advised that buses are temporarily suspended until further notice due to shooting incidences to bus drivers that happened last night in Soweto. We advise passengers to use alternative public transport. Regular updates on the situation will be given.”

The killings come just a week after criminals torched more than 50 buses in Mpumalanga. Police have arrested two people for the bus burnings.

Police say they don’t yet know why the drivers were killed but are investigating both murders.
