Dr Nasiphi Moya of ActionSA, The newly elected deputy mayor of the City of Tshwane, has committed herself to helping vulnerable community members by providing essential social relief and improving service delivery.
Moya, who served the council for four years — first as group head in the office of the chief whip then as chief of staff to the then executive mayor — was elected unopposed during a special council meeting on Thursday, which was boycotted by EFF councillors.
The DA-led multiparty coalition proposed the position of the deputy mayor in a bid to help bring stability to the troubled metro.
Moya’s key areas of focus will be infrastructure development and maintenance among other roles, including monitoring and managing the city’s projects to ensure completion.
Over the years the metro has seen many service delivery projects left unfinished. The Rooiwal Water Treatment Plant, for example, has still not been refurbished and upgraded to supply the residents of Hammanskraal with clean drinking water.
Moya called on the city’s councillors to put their political differences aside and focus on serving the residents of Tshwane.
“Let us all commit to represent and serve our communities. Lean on me for support and collaboration to deliver on the promises we made in 2021,” she said.
The 23 EFF councillors tried to block Moya’s election, accusing her of financial misconduct and demanding that she should not be trusted with responsibility for the metro.
They alleged that Moya pocketed more than R10,000 for a trip to Saudi Arabia, which she didn’t undertake. The EFF walked out of the election, saying it was fraudulent as the position should be filled by a councillor who was already on the mayoral executive committee.
The EFF Tshwane caucus leader, Obakeng Ramabodu, said: “Moya is not fit to occupy that position. She proved this when she approved that trip, chose not to attend and failed to return the pocket money. We refuse to be part of fraudulent things. Mark my words, they will regret this.”
