Tshwane closes Akasia licensing centre with no reopening date

  • The City of Tshwane has closed the Station Square Licensing Centre in Akasia from 26 October, affecting vehicle registrations, licence renewals and learner’s licence tests.
  • Motorists must use other licensing centres while the city prepares a permanent replacement in Pretoria North, with renovations expected to finish in November.

Motorists in Akasia and Pretoria North will have to travel elsewhere to renew their vehicle licences, book learner’s licence tests or get driving licence cards renewed.

The City of Tshwane has shut down the Station Square Licensing Centre in Akasia from Monday, 26 October 2026, following a legal dispute over the premises.

The sudden closure leaves residents who depend on the centre looking for other places to get their licensing paperwork done.

Here is what motorists need to know:

Why has the licensing centre closed?

The City of Tshwane says developments in an ongoing court case involving the Station Square premises have forced it to stop offering licensing services at the centre.

Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport Tlangi Mogale announced the decision on Saturday, 24 October.

The city has not given details of the legal dispute or explained which developments forced the closure.

Which services are affected?

Motorists can no longer use the Station Square centre for vehicle registrations, motor vehicle licensing, vehicle licence renewals or driving licence card renewals.

People who want to take their learner’s licence tests will also have to go elsewhere.

Who will be affected?

The closure mainly affects residents of Akasia, Pretoria North and surrounding communities who normally use Station Square.

People whose licences are due for renewal or who need to register vehicles will have to make other arrangements.

How long will the centre remain closed?

The city plans to move the affected services permanently to the Tshiamo Centre in Pretoria North.

Renovations at Tshiamo Centre are expected to be completed by the end of November 2026.

However, this does not mean licensing services will automatically restart in November.

The city must first complete other operating and legal requirements before opening the replacement centre.

It has not announced an exact reopening date.

Where can motorists go instead?

Residents must use other City of Tshwane licensing centres that are still operating.

The city has not provided a list of alternative centres in its statement.

Motorists should check which centres are operating and whether they offer the services they need before travelling.

What does the city say?

Mogale acknowledged that the closure would disrupt residents, especially because they had little time to make other arrangements.

“We recognise that this transition will inconvenience residents of Akasia, Pretoria North and surrounding areas, particularly given the short period available to make alternative arrangements,” Mogale said.

“Our priority is to establish the replacement service at Tshiamo Centre as quickly as possible while ensuring that it meets all regulatory and operational requirements.”

For now, motorists who relied on Station Square will have to use other licensing centres until the new Pretoria North facility is ready.
