US President Donald Trump’s attempt to reverse the results of the election that he has just lost is turning out to be a gigantic flop.
On Thursday Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani literally melted down at a press conference when his hair dye started dripping down his face.
Giuliani was addressing a press conference where Trump’s legal team claimed that President elect Joe Biden had been bankrolled by Communist money to steal an election that Trump had “clearly won in a landslide”.
There is no evidence for this baseless conspiracy and all 29 lawsuits that Trump’s legal team has brought so far, alleging fraud, have been thrown out of court.
Giuliani’s meltdown drew howls of laughter from late night comedians. Daily Show host Trevor Noah asked: “Was his brain shitting itself? Honestly, I didn’t even know that sideburns could get periods.
“You know your legal strategy is fucked up when even your hair starts crying about it.”
The Drudge Report, a rightwing news site that usually supports Trump, had the headline: GHOULIANI.
But Trump’s ever escalating attempts to subvert American democracy is not a laughing matter.
Though he will only be president for two more months Trump is using the power of his office to put pressure on members of his Republican Party to overturn the election.
With his courtroom barrage falling, Trump and his allies are calling on party loyalists to block recognition of Biden’s victory in key states where the election result was narrow.
Trump’s sacking of officials in the security agencies who are regarded as not loyal enough, and their replacement by party hacks, has made some people nervous that he is planning a coup.
But even many Republican officials are resisting his attempts to bully them.
Mitt Romney, a Senator from Trump’s own party, said that “it is difficult to imagine a worse, more undemocratic act by a sitting American president.”
Biden has remained quietly confident that he will be installed as president on 20 January. “It’s hard to fathom how this man thinks,” Biden said this week, shaking his head. “It’s hard to fathom.”
Trump has a very good reason for wanting to stay in office. He will lose his presidential immunity and is likely to be charged with tax evasion, corruption and fraud.
Jacob Zuma should be expecting a phone call soon asking for some tips on how to stay out of jail.
