- Donald Trump threatens to hit Russia with heavy taxes if it doesn’t stop the war in Ukraine.
- Trump claims he could end the war in 24 hours if he becomes president again.
Former president Donald Trump has warned Russia he will punish them if they don’t end the war in Ukraine soon.
Trump said he would hit Russia with heavy taxes and other penalties if they keep fighting.
“Russia’s economy is failing,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. He told Russian president Vladimir Putin to “settle now and stop this ridiculous war.”
Trump said he would make Russia pay more to sell goods to America and other countries if they don’t make peace.
“Without a deal, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries,” he said.
Trump believes the war wouldn’t have started if he was still president. He claims he can end it quickly if he wins the next election.
“I have to speak to President Putin. We’re going to have to find out,” Trump said, claiming he could stop the war in just 24 hours.
Trump has told his special adviser Keith Kellogg to make a plan to end the war within 100 days.
Russian leaders seem keen to work with Trump. Putin praised Trump’s wish to “restore direct contacts with Russia.”
But experts say Trump’s threat might not worry Russia much. America only buys about R64-billion worth of goods from Russia each year. This is small compared to the R28-trillion in trade between America and Europe.
Some experts think Putin will keep fighting if he doesn’t get the peace deal he wants, even if it hurts Russia’s economy.
