From the liking of controversial tweets, to on-field clashes — tension between two of football’s biggest superstars is at boiling point in the French capital.
Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr clashed on the weekend, when Mbappe showed clear frustration after he wasn’t passed the ball during a counter attack.
The Frenchman also missed a penalty and then appeared to disagree with Neymar’s decision to take the second spot kick.
In the end PSG beat Montpellier 5-2, but the mood was far from celebratory, and that continued off the pitch post-match.
Neymar liked tweets criticising his teammate’s decision to sign a new contract and that the decision had negatively impacted his performance.
Multiple reports stated that the pair had a dressing room spat after the game and some even went as far as stating that Mbappe has demanded that the Brazilian is sold.
“The issues at PSG are not simply because of penalty duties,” French journalist Romain Molina said. “It’s mainly because Mbappe asked the PSG hierarchy to sell Neymar, and Neymar found out about it.”
The presence of Lionel Messi, apart from quality, also adds to the star power and drama within the team. And having all three players on the pitch, according to French legend Thierry Henry, means there will “always be problems” at the club.
“It’s his [Mbappe’s] place. He will of course have to show it as he has shown from the start. But he has nothing to prove to anyone. The coach will have to find a way to play all three [Messi, Neymar, Mbappe] and make them happy. Good luck,” Henry said.
“At PSG, there is always a debate, a problem. They won 5-2 and we’re talking about Mbappe.
Last year, it was Neymar and it will always be like that, it’s PSG.”
