- Codeta says it will act after a video showed kids packed in a trailer.
- The government praises quick arrests for endangering young lives on the road.
The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) says it will deal with one of its drivers who was filmed transporting schoolchildren in a trailer.
The video went viral on social media. The driver has since been arrested for reckless and negligent driving and putting the lives of young passengers in danger.
Codeta chairman Nceba Enge confirmed the arrest.
“We are preparing to bury one of our members. We’ll deal with this issue on Monday,” said Enge.
The video, filmed in Wellington, shows a minibus pulling a trailer packed with learners.
Western Cape MEC for Mobility Isaac Sileku praised law enforcement for acting quickly.
“It is deeply concerning that any driver would think it’s acceptable to transport children in such unsafe conditions,” said Sileku.
“Our officers acted fast, and we commend them for ensuring accountability. Scholar transport must follow safety rules to protect our children.”
According to Sileku, operators transporting learners must have valid permits under the National Land Transport Act. Their vehicles must be roadworthy and legally licensed.
The Western Cape Government is urging parents to help by checking that the transport used by their children is safe and legal.
“We are committed to enforcing road safety laws and protecting all road users — especially young learners travelling to and from school,” said Sileku.
A parent, who asked not to be named, said the drivers are misleading families.
“When the drivers come to fetch our kids, the vehicle looks empty. We only realise later, through viral videos, that our kids were packed like sardines. These drivers must face punishment,” said the parent.
