Top Kenyan athlete survives plane crash

The world 800m champion David Rudisha was unharmed after a plane he was travelling in crashed in Kenya on Saturday.

Rudisha was on his way back from the Masaai Olympics in a small plane with five other people when it crashed at Imbirikani. Only one passenger required hospital treatment after the pilot managed to make a dramatic emergency landing.

Speaking to the Daily Nation newspaper, the athlete said all was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the plane’s engine suddenly went quiet.

The pilot was forced to look for a place to land safely.

Rudisha described the moment as “scary” when they descended and one of the plane’s wings hit a tree, causing it to spin around before landing on a rocky field.

“The pilot did an incredible job to keep the plane afloat and stable for so long,” said Rudisha.

While the retired athlete and some on board escaped unhurt, one of the occupants was reportedly being treated in hospital with injuries after the crash.

The person was identified as Stephen Ole Maraj and was treated for rib injuries before being discharged.

Rudisha also survived a car accident in 2019 when his SUV collided head-on with a bus on the Nairobi-Kisumu highway.
