Toffees lend Reds a helping hand

Everton held Arsenal to a draw on Saturday, meaning Liverpool are now just four wins away from sealing the Premier League title.

It was Goodison Park’s last ever edition of the fixture, 120 years to the day since the first time the sides faced off at the ground. And the blue half of Merseyside were adamant on bouncing back from their derby defeat in midweek.

The point gained by David Moyes’ side may have done Liverpool a favour, but even Gunners fans would have known that a win for their side would only have delayed the inevitable, anyway.

Leandro Trossard’s opener before the break put the visitors in control, but despite dominating the ball and creating more, Arsenal never really played like title contenders.

You would expect them to have had an eye on Real Madrid’s Champions League visit in three days time; and perhaps that is why the concentration slipped midway through the second period when they conceded a controversial penalty.

Iliman Ndiaye converted from the spot and Everton picked up a fifth draw in six games.

The major talking point from the afternoon will undoubtedly be that Liverpool are now 11 points clear and require 11 more from eight games to seal their 20th league title.

Should it happen by then, Arsenal will have to form a guard of honour for Arne Slot’s side when they return to Merseyside in mid May.
