Three people were electrocuted in three separate incidents this past weekend in Gqeberha due to illegal connections.
Masixole Nombewu, 26, is one of them. He was found lying on the roof of the backyard room he was renting with live wires in his hand in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said Masixole’s lifeless body was found by someone who lives in the main house at about 2am on Saturday.
“The occupant of the main house in Couta Street, Kuyga, Greenbushes, heard the dogs barking and when she went outside to investigate, she found the tenant of the flat lying lifeless on the roof with wires in his hands,” said Naidu.
She added that it is suspected that Masixole was attempting to connect electricity to his back room when he was electrocuted.
Masixole was not the only one to lose his life under similar circumstances this weekend.
Naidu said a 24-year-old woman from Wells Estate had also lost her life after allegedly touching an illegal connection and on Sunday morning, a teenager from Booysens Park was also electrocuted while walking in an open space.
She said one of the friends she had been walking with tried to help her, but after also getting shocked, he moved away. The 18-year-old teenager died at the scene.
Naidu said police are urging residents to refrain from connecting electricity illegally as it can have deadly consequences.
