This amapiano mayor should probably stick to service delivery

It seems the days of being late to work or school are over for the people of eThekwini, as the municipality’s mayor has released a perfect alarm tune to get you up in the morning.

At the age of 49, Mxolisi Kaunda decided to pass his message to the youngsters through an amapiano song titled “Mtomusha”, meaning Youth.

The track was produced by his own son who studied sound engineering.

Well, just in case you were wondering, Kaunda should probably stick to his day job.

In the 4:18 minute-long song, Kaunda sings – no, he talks – his way through the groovy tune which he revealed was produced in just three hours.

“Ifuna umuntu omusha athathe is’nqumo esisha, sithi vuuuka, vuka muntu omusha!” sings the mayor in the chorus of the song, advising the youth to wake up and take notes from other people who have made it in life.

The mayor launched the song at the 85th anniversary of the SABC in Durban.

It seems the mayor did not consult a successful amapiano artist before making the song, as it sounds more like one of his political speeches or an annoying alarm clock.

“If you want to communicate with young people, it is important to use an easy way that will reach them,” said Kaunda.

“Music is a good medium, because they like it,” said Kaunda, presumably before hearing any feedback from a young person.

But now it’s too late, the song is out and most people are not impressed.

“The approach should have been different, if the Mayor wanted to pass a certain message to the youth through Amapiano, there are many artists in the industry who could have reached far more people and made more sense to us,” said one user on Facebook.

Nice try Mister Mayor, but the message is clear:  you can do better in your own lane.
