The winners of the Climate Media Awards 2024

Scrolla.Africa is thrilled to announce the outstanding journalists and content creators who’ve been recognised for their excellent climate change reporting in South Africa!

The judges included renowned media figures Africa Melane, Rochelle de Kock and Tiisetso Motsoeneng as well as Scrolla.Africa’s political editor Zukile Majova. They looked at entries across Written, Broadcast, and Social Media categories.

Top honours go to Vateka Halile in Written, Suzanne Paxton in Broadcast, and Onke Ngcuka in Social Media.

Standout coverage included Suzanne Paxton’s powerful investigation into the Northern Cape heatwaves, Vateka Halile’s community-focused reporting, and Onke Ngcuka’s urgent, visually compelling social media stories.

Special mention goes to our Wild Card selection, Rejoice Kgabo Lekgodi, for bringing fresh perspectives to climate journalism and showing the impacts of climate change.

“It’s clear that climate change is an important story for everyone in South Africa,” said the judges. “These journalists aren’t just reporting facts – they’re showing how communities are experiencing climate impacts firsthand.”

We were happy to see so many people enter, and we found new content creators we hadn’t heard of before.

We’re excited for next year’s awards in 2025, where we’ll keep finding talented creators and help them grow, so they can better report on how climate change is affecting people.

Mark your calendars for 2025’s awards as we continue discovering and nurturing South Africa’s climate storytellers!
