Pope Francis has warned that there are dark times ahead for mankind.
The head of the Catholic Church gave a gloomy speech during the commemoration of the holy mass on the feast of Our Lady Guadalupe, which fell on Monday.
“It is a bitter time, filled with the rumbling of war, growing injustice, famine, poverty, and suffering,” said the 85-year-old, adding that things will only get worse, the Daily Mail reports.
Yes, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ethiopia’s civil war, the threat of another global pandemic, a global recession and frequent natural disasters, is not as bad as it gets.
Sharing his vision of the world with the congregation at the Vatican on Sunday, the pontiff added that though this horizon seems bleak and disconcerting, Christmas is a time when God will come down to “tell us that this too is a propitious time of salvation.”
Continuing his speech, he called for the congregation to go out to meet “our brothers and sisters who have been forgotten and discarded by our consumerist and indifferent societies.
“As believers in Christ, it is our responsibility to be credible witnesses of the love of Jesus Christ and decisive protagonists in building a new culture,” he added.
The 12 December is the day the Virgin Mary appeared to a young man named Saint Juan Diego in Mexico City in 1531. The day is a national holiday in Mexico.
