- Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube was chased away from a teachers’ protest in KZN because she is from the DA party.
- Teachers insulted both the Minister and MEC Hlomuka during the protest, preventing them from hearing their grievances about working conditions.
KZN teachers refused to let Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube speak to them about their complaints on Thursday because she is from the DA.
Minister Gwarube arrived with Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule and KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka to hear teachers’ concerns about funding and working conditions.
But members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) wouldn’t listen. Instead, they shouted: “You need to go. We cannot be addressed by the DA. We will never allow that. Gwarube, as ugly as you are, just leave. MEC Hlomuka is a witch. He is destroying our profession.”
When Deputy Minister Mhaule, who is also an ANC National Executive Committee member, tried to intervene, the teachers told her not to shout at them.
They said they had made it clear they wouldn’t listen to a DA leader.
Mhaule then took Gwarube’s hand and left while the teachers continued singing and shouting insults.
MEC Hlomuka attempted to tell the teachers that Minister Gwarube was their boss from the National Office and should address them, but they wouldn’t listen.
The ministers had to leave without hearing why the teachers were protesting.
