- A man entered a school by cutting through a fence and shot three teachers in the kitchen, killing one and injuring two others.
- Police confirmed the suspect was already facing sexual assault charges involving learners from the same school.
A teacher was killed after a man entered a school and opened fire on staff.
Police said the man cut through the school fence to get inside. He went straight to the kitchen, where he found three teachers.
The man opened fire, killing one teacher at the scene. Two other teachers were shot and injured.
After the shooting, the man turned the gun on himself.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the suspect was already facing sexual assault charges involving learners from the same school.
She said police will investigate how he managed to enter the school while out on bail.
“A full investigation will be launched into the attack, including how he managed to breach his bail conditions,” Gantana said.
She confirmed that police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder. An inquest has also been opened.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, condemned the attack.
She said police extend condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the teacher who died.
Kupiso also said police are thinking of the injured teachers and wish them a full recovery.
The names of the victims and the shooter have not been released.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
