A woman was shot and killed in Alexandra on Monday evening.
She was coming home from work when she encountered angry protesters who had blocked a taxi’s path.
Reports suggest that some of the protesters were throwing stones at the taxi, prompting the driver to retaliate by firing a shot that hit the woman. She died at the scene.
In a video obtained by Scrolla.Africa, a male protester is seen chasing and whipping at passing motorists, including the taxi driver in a Toyota Quantum who fired his gun and killed the woman after his taxi was pelted with stones.
On Friday, Scrolla.Africa published a story about protesting residents in the township. They are angry over the lack of electricity and water in parts of Alex and have been closing off major routes surrounding the township, plunging it and the surrounding areas into turmoil.
On Monday afternoon, the protests continued with demonstrators burning tyres and chasing passing motorists.
Ward 105 councillor Tefo Raphadu confirmed the woman’s death.
“As leaders, we are still at the crime scene trying to establish what happened.”
Raphadu said he had been given the registration number of the taxi involved in the shooting.
Community leader Vincent Ndima condemned the shooting that resulted in “an innocent life lost in this tragic way”.
“People must protest peacefully. People have the right to protest, but they must also respect other people’s rights,” said Ndima.
Alexandra has been experiencing prolonged power cuts since the beginning of winter. Scrolla.Africa spoke to City Power’s Isaac Mangena on Friday, who said City Power’s Alexandra Service Delivery Centre was under severe pressure. On Friday alone, the entity received over 800 complaints.
“Given the history of violence and attacks on our technicians in the Alexandra area, the team unfortunately cannot work overnight in some areas,” he said on Friday.
