- A taxi driver was filmed in Bellville after a sex worker accused him of not paying and posted the video online.
- The local taxi council and the Mowbray taxi association say they are embarrassed and have fined the driver for breaking route and conduct rules.
A Codeta taxi driver has been fined after a sex worker in Bellville exposed him on social media for allegedly refusing to pay for sex.
The woman filmed the driver’s taxi and shared the video online, saying he came to them but didn’t want to pay. She said she wanted the taxi owner to see that the driver had taken the vehicle to Bellville without permission.
The driver, however, told officials that the woman changed their agreement after they were done, increasing the price they had agreed on.
Masithembe Mnyosi, secretary of the Mowbray route where the driver works, said they called him in after seeing the video.
“He didn’t deny it,” said Mnyosi. “We asked why he went there because Bellville is not our route. If officers had stopped him, the taxi could’ve been impounded.”
Mnyosi said the driver broke several rules by leaving his route and putting the taxi at risk.
“The rank decided he must pay a fine,” he said. “If it happens again, we’ll have no choice but to fire him.”
Codeta spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana said the organisation is embarrassed by the incident.
“We are disappointed. He was not supposed to be there driving the taxi,” said Tumana. “Videos like these drag the name of our organisation through the mud.”
Codeta says while it can’t control every driver’s actions, it expects them to respect the organisation’s name and routes.
