Swallows are the stalemate kings

It’s not a record any team wants, but on Tuesday the Dube Birds set the record for the most draws in a single season after a goalless result with Stellenbosch.

“It’s a record, yes. But it’s a record I hope gets beaten soon,” said Swallows coach Brandon Truter.

“We are the first team to win the GladAfrica Championship and now we are the first team to draw 18 games in the PSL.”

Swallows have now recorded 18 draws in 27 matches. The previous record of 17 draws was held by SuperSport United, Free State Stars and Santos.

For the opening few months of the current season, Swallows held the league’s pole position, sharing it with the likes of SuperSport and Mamelodi Sundowns. They went unbeaten for 15 games, winning seven and drawing eight matches, which was a particularly impressive achievement given they had been out of the first division for six years.

However, the second half of the season has been a different story altogether. They have won one game so far since the halfway point, drawn ten and have lost one.

With three games left, it remains to be seen how it will end for them – will they add more draws to their tally?

They face a difficult run in: Sundowns, who are one match away from being crowned DStv Premiership champions, second placed AmaZulu, and top eight hopefuls Baroka.
