A Port Shepstone man, who allegedly killed the 24-year-old mother of his child on the weekend by stabbing her 14 times, has handed himself over to the police.
The attack happened in front of the couple’s disabled seven-year-old son and the victim’s younger sister, the woman’s stepfather told Scrolla.Africa.
He alleged that there was a history of abuse.
“Even when she was pregnant he would beat her up,” the stepfather said.
“We are convinced that he is the reason why their child was born with a disability because he beat her up badly when she was pregnant.”
The stepfather said despite the repeated attacks she would not leave him.
It is believed that the suspect had wanted the woman to visit him at his Gamalakhe home on the weekend. She refused because there was nobody to look after their child and her younger sister.
The angry suspect came around to the house in the early hours of Saturday morning, forced the door open and attacked her.
“I was in another room and could not sleep because of the noise from a neighbour’s radio when I heard someone kicking the door in,” said the stepfather.
“When I got out I ran into my stepdaughter’s younger sister who told me that her sister’s boyfriend was hitting her.”
He said he found his wounded stepdaughter sitting on the floor.
“She was struggling to breathe and bleeding badly. She told me the father of her child had stabbed her,” he said.
He alerted the neighbours who called the police and the ambulance but the young woman died at the scene.
“She was a good child who did everything right,” he told Scrolla.Africa.
The alleged perpetrator initially went on the run after the brutal stabbing, but called the police and asked them to pick him up on Monday night. That’s after his family put him under pressure to do the right thing.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the police had arrested the suspect and that he was expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
The stepfather said they were relieved that the suspect had been apprehended after he had allegedly fled to his relatives in KwaMadlala where he had been hiding.
