Three civilians have died and more than 30 have been injured in Uganda after three suicide bombers targeted the capital city Kampala on Tuesday.
The three attackers blew themselves up next to Kampala’s parliament building and the city’s police headquarters.
The attacks took place within three minutes of each other as the bombers arrived at the scene riding motorbikes.
Several nearby cars burst into flames as civilians rushed for cover. With reports of body parts strewn across Parliamentary Avenue, the death toll is likely to rise.
A fourth attacker who apparently failed to detonate his bombs has been arrested and a suicide vest has been recovered. Other bombs have been found across the city, officials say.
“The bomb threats are active, especially from suicide attackers,” said police spokesperson Fred Enanga.
Officials in Kampala say the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a militant Islamist group based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, are to blame for the attacks. No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks yet.
“We believe there are still more members of these domestic terror cells, especially the suicide bomb squad that has been created by the ADF,” Enanga said.
Last month, the ADF claimed responsibility for an attack which took place in a bar in Kampala which claimed the life of a 20-year-old waitress.
