- Police are meeting with parents and school staff after reports of fights and students bringing weapons.
A Tjaart van der Walt Primary School pupil lost an eye during a fight at the school in Nelson Mandela Bay on Wednesday.
Education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said a boy’s eye was cut open by another pupil’s fist during the fight.
“When we investigated further, we found out that eight learners have been threatening each other and fighting every day after school on their way home,” he said.
Police will meet with the pupils, their parents and school officials on Friday morning to deal with the problem.
The fights involve Grade 6 and 7 pupils who allegedly bring weapons to school. A knife was taken during Wednesday’s fight but wasn’t used.
Mtima said people from outside the school have also been targeting pupils on their way home. Police are trying to identify these attackers.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed officers were called to the school.
