A Nelson Mandela University student died after an off-campus residence manager allegedly hit him with a car early on Sunday.

Thandolwami Ndlovu, 24, was reportedly struck after pointing what turned out to be a toy gun at the manager.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said Ndlovu was hit by a car on Clyde Street in Gqeberha Central.

ā€œIt is alleged that at about 1:30 am, a blue Mercedes-Benz struck the victim, and he was declared dead at the scene,ā€ he said.

ā€œThe circumstances surrounding this incident are forming part of the investigation.ā€

He added that police are investigating culpable homicide.

Nelson Mandela University (NMU) stated that Ndlovu had previously stayed at a private residence in Central.

The university said they were shocked, condemning ā€œthis senseless act in the strongest termsā€ and announced that it was working with the police while conducting its own investigation into the incident.

The NMU Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) said Ndlovu was one of its SRC candidates in Tuesdayā€™s student elections.

ā€œThe passing of fighter Thando has once again reminded us of the plague of crime and violence that we are faced with as the youth,ā€ the group said.

ā€œThe gruesome death of Thando has left a terrible scar on many members of our organisation. We hope justice will run its course for Thando and his family.ā€

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso) won the SRC election on Tuesday, defeating the EFF Student Command. Daso secured 34 of the 43 SRC seats.

Daso has tipped Lathitha Mbuzwana as the likely SRC president.
