There were violent scenes at Alexandra High School on Tuesday as learners fought using chairs, tables, and even planks.
Several students were injured and had to be taken to a local clinic.
Four boys believed to have started the fight, were arrested and are being held at the Alexandra police station.
A 22-second video obtained by Scrolla.Africa shows learners hitting each other with chairs and planks, kicking, and stomping on one another, while others cheered and whistled as the brawl continued.
School safety activist Vincent Ndima explained that the chaos began when a former learner arrived at the school with friends and started the fight. They reportedly told the security guard they were there to collect results, but once inside, the situation quickly escalated.
Ndima mentioned that the boys are part of street gangs and that one gang member is currently a learner at the school.
“These are street gang groups, and unfortunately, they brought their fight onto school grounds,” he said.
A student who witnessed the fight from a balcony described it as dangerous and unlike anything he had seen before.
Parents in the community blame the violent behaviour on poor upbringing, with one parent claiming that even teachers are too afraid to intervene.
This is not the first time learners from Alexandra High have got into such a dangerous fight. In January 2023, learners stormed the school kitchen and took food that was supposed to be dished up for everyone.
They ran amok when they realised that the school had prepared phuthu and maas for their lunch.
Reports at the time said they were angry because they didn’t want to eat the food on offer.
In September 2022, learners celebrated Spring Day by throwing chairs at each other and spraying with fire extinguishers around the premises.
Identified culprits in this incident were taken to Leeuwkop Prison to show them where they would be locked up if they behaved as they had on Spring Day.
But the learners don’t seem to have learnt anything as the unfortunate events at the school keep on repeating.
